So, you probably know by now that I’m trying to become more organized…at least with our school day and time. The kids are getting older, and the girl child starts high school next year, so we need to become more focused with our time. Plus, I’d like Rach to be able to motivate herself to be more aware of her day and how she spends her time, and what she accomplishes. I heard about My Student Logbook, researched the site, and fell in love! The My Student Logbook is recommended for grades 2nd and up. We received a dated book, and at the time of this posting, the cost is $15 for a physical book. There is also a download option ranging from $10-$20.
The My Student Logbook was created when Corina Abbott and her husband were expecting their 7th baby, and were also homeschooling their oldest 4 children. She was tired of being behind, and wasn’t happy with any other planners that were already out there. So, she made her own! This is a pretty unique student planner; I’ve never seen anything quite like it. If you choose a physical book, it’s spiral-bound, which is really nice and makes it easier to use (I love books that lay flat). Since Rach is getting older, I want to provide her with tools to help her succeed in her school career, and since we’ll really need to keep up with her work next year, I figured it’d be a great idea to start her early.
The book dates begin with July 28, 2014, and end with July 26, 2015, so this covers nearly a full year. This is great if you officially school year-round (we do not, but this could still help with other tasks). At the beginning of the book are the 4 steps that it takes to set up your My Student Logbook. It’s really so easy. There are 6 checklist pages that you can use (not all at once, you use one at a time) to keep track of tasks that need to be completed. These are cut out and folded as directed. Then you’ll wrap the checklist around the first dated page in the calendar section where you are starting, and tape it to the back of the page. On your folded checklist page, your student writes their list of work tasks that they need to complete on a regular basis. There’s also a time column where you can write either what time each task should be completed, or how much time it will/should take. As each task is completed, the student can then check the box for each day each task is completed, or you the parent can put a grade in the box, or write the number of hours completed. Once a week is complete, simply lift up your checklist, go to the next page, and tuck the new page into your checklist. If you need to change your checklist, you simply tear out a new unused checklist, and create the new list like you did your previous one, and tape the new list to the new week. On each calendar page, there is a section for writing any notes that are needed. There are also instructions for using the My Student Logbook to make high school transcripts. This will come in handy for me next year and in years to come.
After all of the calendar pages is a divider page, and then some other miscellaneous pages. There’s an All About Me page that your child can fill out, and pages for writing prayers and goal, memorized Bible verses, several pages for keeping track of books that have been read, several pages for field trips and projects, several pages to keep track of tests taken, and finally, a highlight page. Here your child can write their favorite memories from the year.
Here are some examples of Rach’s:
Here you can see how the checklist page lifts up when you finish a week:
This was super simple to put together. Once I taped the checklist in, we used our family schedule to make Rach’s daily list out. Then, as she completes her tasks, she marks it off for the day. This motivates her to get her work done and be more independent.
I purple sparkly heart the My Student Logbook, and plan to continue to use them for years to come. There are lots of nice cover designs available to choose from, and I also plan to use them with my boys.
