I am so excited to have a guest post for you today! Leah Heffner from Life Around the Coffee Cup is offering up a post for us to encourage us in our marriages. All of us have gone through the Land of Littles, and some of us may be there now. If you are, don’t be discouraged.
I don’t know about you, but I am in the Land of Littles.
Little socks. Little shoes. Little pairs of superhero and princess undies. Little kisses. Little fingers holding little spoons.
Little sleep. Little budget. Little quiet time. Little energy. Little coffee left in the pot.
So much little.
Sometimes, my marriage is right there in the Land of Littles. Little words. Little-to-no kisses. Little attention.
While our kids will all too quickly grow and leave the Land of Littles, if we don’t take intentional steps in our marriages now, they never will.
So how do we do it? How do we transplant our marriages from the Land of Littles to the fertile soil of the Valley of Plenty?
With Marriage Moments.
Remember when you were dating or courting your husband and you could talk for hours, seriously hours about nothing, everything, every little and big thing? Remember how those moments added up to hours, sometimes all night, and days that turned into the dreams of you growing old together?
Remember the smiles that turned into laughter, the food that turned into meals, the dreams that turned into goals that turned into reality?
Each of those moments, those small little things, all built together to make one amazingly beautiful big thing.
And right now, in the Land of Littles, your marriage, my marriage, is no different.
Marriage Moments are like Duplo bricks. Each one is special and certainly has the ability to become something great, but it needs more – more bricks to grow and build off of, more pieces to support the structure.
What do Marriage Moments look like in the Land of Littles?
Hold hands while watching TV.
Take care of the 3 chores that bug him the most.
Give him a 15-second kiss before he walks out the door in the morning.
And one when he walks back in at night.
Stop what you’re doing and look in his eyes when you ask about his day.
Sit with him and watch him while he works on a project.
Get excited about something he’s excited about.
Get him the first small piece or tool for a project he wants to start.
And a million other little things.
Marriage Moments don’t have to be big, or expensive, or time-consuming.
They have to be genuine, thoughtful, and intentional.
Getting to the Valley of Plenty
Once these moments become intentional, they’ll become more frequent. When you’re looking for opportunities to be intentional, you’ll keep seeing more and more opportunities. Whatever you look for is what you’ll see.
And believe it or not, there won’t come a day when you transplant your marriage from the Land of Littles to the Valley of Plenty. Each moment, each action, will put love and care into where you already are.
The Land of Littles will become the Valley of Plenty if you choose to water the grass in seeking out the moments. The Marriage Moments will make all the difference.
