I was recently asked to try a product that I had never heard of before, but I knew would be fantastic to use with children! Children love to draw and paint, but like most parents, I really detest the mess that painting usually makes, especially with younger children. I received a 12-pack of Kwik Stix to try with my kiddos.
Kwik Stix are a pretty unique product offered by The Pencil Grip, Inc. company. At first glance, they look like huge crayons, but they are actually solid tempera paint! We’ve only used watercolor or tube/acrylic paints, so I was super excited to give these to the kids. My kids, especially my 2 youngest boys, are pretty messy, so I was looking forward to seeing how these worked for us.
A little information about Kwik Stix: as I said, these are made of solid tempera paint. They are capped like markers, so just pop off the cap and twist the paint stick up. Then paint away! Kwik Stix take just 90 seconds to dry. You don’t need any water to use them; they are ready to go right our of the package and aren’t messy to use. I will note that it’s possible to paint on your skin (I tried it) but it washed off very easily. I haven’t tried this on fabrics, just skin. Kwik Stix will work on paper, canvas, wood, and cardboard. I’m sure they’ll work on other things, like furniture, but I don’t recommend that unless you’re adventurous. I’m not that adventurous.
As soon as our package came in the mail, the kids, of course, were like vultures. Every time I get a package they think it’s theirs, or they at least beg to open it. I knew what it was, so I let them. Instant excitement, people. I’m telling you. If it’s art-related, at least 3 of my kids perk up. Ethan and Lucas immediately sat down and got to work; no time to even clean the table off. Sorry about that.
The boys loved the Kwik Stix. Of course, they managed to fight over colors, but it wasn’t all-out war or anything like that, thank goodness. The colors in the 12-pack are black, brown, royal blue, blue, forest green, green, red, fuschia, orange, yellow, and white. Pretty basic colors, but you can do a lot with those.
The boys were super excited about having their pictures taken, as always.
We were all impressed with how quickly the paint dries on the paper. It sort of looks like a mix of watercolor and crayon, in my opinion. I think the Kwik Stix work fabulously. I love how much less messy they are than standard paint, and they are super fun to paint with. This was Lucas’ final picture. You can see his fingerprints on the bottom, because, of course, he had to touch the paint while it was still wet. Don’t ask me what PTE is, because he didn’t put it there, and no else knows where it came from if you catch my drift.
Kwik Stix would make a great addition to anyone’s art supplies. They would be perfect for little hands since they are a bit large and easy to grip. I also received some pens with Pencil Grips on them. I managed to snag one with a Crossover Grip. I love how cute and squishy they are. They take a little practice getting used to, but I think they’ll be beneficial to children, and even adults, to assist with pen or pencil gripping while writing. Each grip is designed with a specific purpose in mind.
