One of the great things about homeschooling is that almost anything can count towards the school day…even games! What’s even better is when the games can actually be used as teaching tools. This is the case with the goodies we were given to review from Clued in Kids. For this review, we received 2 products, Multiplication Dragons, which is like a 5-in-1 product, and Happy Tummy Treasure Hunt. I was super stoked to get these. The kiddos can use some extra practice with their times tables (this works on 2x-6x), and I wanted something that would be a fun way to teach some nutrition facts. At the time of posting, Multiplication Dragons costs $19.99, and Happy Tummy Treasure Hunt is $5.99. As for age ranges, it really depends on where your child is at. Happy Tummy can be for any age, but Multiplication Dragons is most suited for around ages 7-9 again, depending on your child’s skills.
Clued In Kids was created by Helen Bertelli. Growing up in England, she had a love for treasure hunts, even creating hunts for children in her own neighborhood. Clued In Kids launched in November 2013, and now she creates fun treasure hunts for a living!
Multiplication Dragons is a set of 5 separate treasure hunts all in one set. The hunts themselves take less than 10 minutes to set up. There are 12 clues for each hunt. Each clue is a puzzle of some sort. There may be a riddle, a word problem (with an answer key), a coded message, hidden object pictures, or even just doing something creative like coloring! All of the clues have a dragon/knight theme; even the riddles! There are 2 clues to a page, and the bottom of each clue tells you (or the Hunt Leader) where to hide it. The last page of the printout is the full answer key, and shows all of the answers or activities that need to be completed. This way the kiddos can come to you if they get stuck on a clue. A “funny” thing about one of the clue locations, is that one is a microwave, and when we first received the set, we didn’t have one. However, not long after, we were gifted a microwave. It’s neat how that worked out, but if you have a toaster oven, you could easily use that for a hiding place as well. The treasure can be anything you want: a special treat, money, tickets to a park, anything!
To me, the Happy Tummy Treasure Hunt is the most interesting, mainly because of the story behind it. A few years back, Helen and one of her daughters each contracts rare autoimmune disorders. These trials inspired her to create this treasure hunt, as well as a Gluten-Free themed hunt. This hunt works similarly to the Multiplication Dragon hunt, but is food-themed. Some clues are body-related, some teach about vitamins. Some clues are mazes, and even backwards writing that needs to be decoded.
I wanted these 2 hunts, because I wanted the kids to practice their times tables, and also a fun way to teach nutrition. The clues really make kids think, and they can either work together on the clues, or each child can have their own clues to work on. That’s really a matter of preference. The hardest thing is getting the kids to stay in one place while you hide all of the clues, because they want to peek! The hunts would also be great for birthday parties or playdates. We had a lot of fun with these. We’ve done a few so far, and they are a great way to have some fun easy “work” for school. The kids worked in teams, since Lucas is so young and isn’t really reading yet. The hunts are really a no-brainer to use, and so much fun! If you want a fun and easy supplement to use with your children, definitely go for Clued In Kids! I will update my post with pictures later, as I’m having issues uploading them for now.
