Growing, picking, and packing oranges is serious business, yo. Joel helps to sort and pack oranges with a 50-pound sack strapped to himself. Could you do that? I’m way too wimpy. I can’t even carry a bag of chicken feed by myself. The oranges go through a black light room to look for bruises, and any bruises will show bright yellow. The oranges must be packed carefully so that they don’t bust. Juicy oranges are good, but not if they’re leaky before you can even eat them.
Here, we get to see adorable sea turtles! Joel visits the Sea Turtle Hospital in Marathon, FL. There are several facts about turtles that I didn’t know. Did you know they’re protected by the federal government, and only the workers at the hospital are allowed to touch them. Joel isn’t a worker, so it was hands-off for him. We even saw a turtle that was missing a limb. Poor little fella! The turtles are rehabilitated at the hospital, then returned to their natural habitat.
Lastly, but certainly not least, we get to see some salmon. Mmm yum. Another one of my favorite foods! Anyway, we get to visit a salmon hatchery in Alaska to see how salmon are raised. It’s pretty cool that salmon can get back to their hatching area by smell.
Obviously, I can’t give away everything that you learn in the DVDs, but as you can see, they’re a great supplemental tool for learning. These would be great to use with unit studies, or just something to chill out and watch with the family. We sat and watched the DVDs back to back during a school day, the kids loved them that much. Shoot, I enjoyed them, too! If you can’t find this show on your local PBS station, then be sure to check out these DVDs. At $24.95, they are somewhat comparable in price to a newly released movie, and about the same length as well. The kids enjoyed them so much that they told me I need to buy them all.
