I’ve been a reader of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine for many years. I’ve been officially home schooling my children for 7 years now. So, I am happy to give a review of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine’s November issue for The Schoolhouse Review Crew! This Christian magazine is jam packed with wonderful information and articles for the homeschooling parent. As a Christian, I like having a Christ-based resource to turn to for information and recommendations. Wanna know the best part? This magazine is FREE every month! As a Mom to 4 children, I really appreciate this aspect. Children are not cheap!
I love to read and do so as often as possible. That is usually in the evenings after we have finished our supper and the dishes have been done. What’s nice about TOS Magazine is that it’s a digital magazine, so there is no clutter to worry about. You can even read it on your Apple, Android, or Kindle product! TOS is one of my most favorite magazines to read.
In the November issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, you will learn many ways to help simplify your life, the Amish and how their children learn, teaching your children courtesy, and different methods of homeschooling. When you go to the first page of the magazine, you’ll see on the left a Table Of Contents sidebar. Here you can scroll down and click to go directly to any article that may interest you, instead of flipping through each page. This area also lists specific magazine links, and there is a Search option as well if you have a specific term you are looking for. You can also hide the sidebar by clicking the little – box in the upper right corner of the sidebar. See an advertisement that you want to check out further? Click on the Advertiser’s Index and you’ll be taken to a list of all of the advertisers in the current magazine issue!
You can also download the magazine in PDF, from cover to cover, or even 2 pages. You can also print the magazine from cover to cover, or just the left or right page! I tested this out, and it’s SO cool. This is a great option if you find a particular article you want to keep, but don’t want to search for it later. Especially if you’re like me and forget things 2 minutes (or less) after you think of them, then remember a year later. Just call me Forgetful Frannie.
The magazine has so much information to offer, really. I’m a pretty relaxed teacher, in my opinion (not sure if my kids would agree! LOL), but I do have a 7 year old struggling to learn to read, still. The Struggling Homeschooler article really touched my heart because of this. The article gave some great tips and tricks to work with your struggling child, and I think these ideas will work no matter what the issue is. I know that in the end, the extra work that we do will be worth it. I feel like there are articles in The Old Schoolhouse Magazine that will pertain to every kind of homeschooler, and there are SO many that there are too many to name. On page 138, you’ll discover frugal ways to teach music to your children. I loved this. Check your local library, or even try bartering for services! This option is becoming very popular in the current lean times. All of my children are music lovers, and I love the helpful ideas.
Are you ready for Christmas yet? I hope you are at least a little, but on page 102, you’ll find some Christmas gift ideas to help you along. These are great educational gift ideas for your family. Remember to budget for them, and also remember to let grandparents and other family member know what you think you or your children would like. There are 6 pages chocked full! Want to teach with toys? Page 94 has a list a different types of toys and what they are best used for. Need to de-clutter before the Holiday? Don’t tell me no, because I know you do. So do I! On page 136 Malia Russell tells some great ways to make your home ready, and even get your family involved. Make it fun!
No matter what kind of teaching style you use, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine will be a great read for you, and really reaches out to all homeschoolers.
Don’t forget, this magazine is always FREE to read online, and through the FREE TOS apps. I think you’ll glean as much from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine as I do. The magazine is for adults, but if you have a child who loves to read they would probably enjoy it as well.
TOS also has several other websites, including SchoolHouseTeachers.com and Econobusters. I use Schoolhouse Teachers every day for our homeschool work. I encourage you to check these sites out as well if you’re not already familiar with them.

awesome, thanks for sharing this! I will have to pass this along to my sister who has 2 HS kiddos. Shoot, I need help with decluttering (plus I eventually plan to homeschool) so I am sure this magazine would be great for me too!
